The nineth class of Dynamics of Leadership was held on Friday, 24th May 2024, a webinar session with one of leader personality named ‘YB Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy bin Abdul Halem’ that was invited to give a speech for today. Before the webinar starts, I am googling YB and after reading the from the news and also from the social media, then I know the answer and very keen to know YB more and face to face even in the virtual.

On the Motto: "ADUN hanya mandat, pekerja kepada rakyat"
Q: “Rasulullah
SAW bersabda, ‘Pemimpin suatu kaum adalah pelayan mereka.’” (HR Ibnu Asakir,
Abu Nu’aim). This hadith is likely related to YB Motto. Where did YB get the
inspiration to create this motto and could he explain further?
A: This motto
stems from his belief that leaders must see themselves as true servants of the
people. He aims to embody humility and prioritise the fundamental needs of
citizens above all else.
On Motivation
to Become an Authentic Leader
Q: Where does
YB get the motivation and spirit to become such an authentic and great leader?
A: He derives
motivation from deeply understanding ordinary people's struggles and
aspirations through lived experiences. His philosophy is grounded in uplifting
communities and creating opportunities.
On Showing
Mercy
Q: Why did YB
make the decision to forgive and not report certain offenders?
A: He recounted
choosing leniency over strict punishment, as he believed contextually it was
the right humane solution. He tries balancing justice with understanding root
causes for rehabilitation.
Handling Hate
Comments on TikTok
Q: As a leader,
how do you handle hate comments on TikTok?
(Asked by
student Teo Sze Ting)
A: He would
remain calm and professional when facing criticism or negative comments on
social media. While trying to understand if there are any valid points to learn
from, he will not dwell too much on negative comments, especially from
ill-intentioned sources. The priority is to stay focused on listening to and
helping people in real life.
Challenges
Faced as a YB
Q: What are the
challenges faced since being appointed as a YB?
(Asked by
student Sobana)
A: A major
challenge is to constantly stay attuned to the real problems faced by the
people such as the cost of living, job opportunities, and access to healthcare.
However, he overcomes this by frequently being among the people and directly
listening to their grievances to gain a deep understanding to be a more
impactful, caring leader.
Advice to Young
Leaders
Q: What is your
advice to young leaders trying to drive change?
(Asked by
student Nurul Amirah)
A: His key advice
is to always maintain humility and a spirit of service to the people. Never
forget your roots. Uphold a people-first, community-centric leadership
principle. Build close bonds with the people, listen to their problems and find
pragmatic solutions. Be adaptable, flexible, and always learning from
experiences. Most importantly, never lose the passion to fight for the people's
welfare and drive progress for future generations – that is the essence of
authentic street leadership.
